Surgery for Ingrown Toenails
If you’ve been living with a painful ingrown toenail, you’ll know how much it can affect everyday things — walking, exercising, even wearing shoes comfortably. The good news is that in most cases, it’s a very treatable problem.
Many ingrown toenails can be resolved with careful, conservative trimming. But if the nail is severely ingrown, keeps coming back, or has become infected, we may recommend a minor procedure called partial or total nail avulsion, carried out by our experienced podiatrists.
This is a straightforward, well-tolerated procedure performed under local anaesthetic, so your toe will be completely numb throughout. We remove the ingrown edge of the nail and will apply phenol to the nail bed, which prevents that portion of the nail from regrowing. This makes the procedure highly effective, with a low rate of recurrence compared with trimming alone.
We’ll talk you through full aftercare advice to support comfortable healing.
